A beginner's work in progress.......
is a symbol of hate
Published on May 15, 2005 By dabe In Politics
It dredges up racism, the KKK, white supremist scumbags, Nazis, Jew haters, and just plain hate. Some people claim that the confederate flag is a symbol of a wonderful southern heritage. Bullshit. If anyone choses to display this controversial symbol, s/he should not be surprised if others question the sanity of this act. Or, the outright stupidity. Racism is, after all, institutionalized insanity. And flag-waving hatred is dumb, at best.

Although people have the right to display whatever they want (hell, my avatar is one of very specific hatred), and I defend the First Amendment of the Constitution that protects free speech, I will never forget the message that hate symbols represent. And, I will also exercise my right of free speech and protest such symbology whereever and whenever I encounter it.

A website you might find rather entertaining on this subject is here http://www.cagle.com/news/flag/

Other good is the ADL site http://www.adl.org/hate_symbols/default_graphics.asp which includes all kinds of hate symbols, including the confederate flag.

In a 2001 interview with Larry King, Rev, Billy Graham stated that in his opinion "racism" is the biggest scurge of our country. No one could mistake Rev. Graham for a liberal.

The Confederate Flag is often used as a tool to divide us. One persons insult may be the next persons sincere expression. I can certainly understand a Black person's sensitivity to the Confederate Flag if they perceive it as a form of taunt and hatred. Let's be honest, what is the one symbol in common with KKK activity and most other people promoting hate and intolerence?

We have a flag in America, and wow, is it beautiful!!

I see it this way. We dont see much of the Nazi flag or the rising sun of Japan anymore. Why? because we defeated them in a little thing called WW2.

The confederate flag should be viewed the same way. They rebelled, they lost.

I think nowadays it's more of a cultural declaration. A way of saying "i'm a white southerner". The problem lies in the fact that the symbol reflects images of the old south back on those who were vicimized by the post reconstruction climate that existed until the civil rights movement of the 1960's. The racist tag wil always be associated with the flag. If someone chooses to fly it, they should accept the fact that it will always be associated with that.

And you are right - in any official government capacity. But this is not about SC (Thanks to Fritz Hollings) flying it over the Capital.  This is about owning one for whatever reason, and being judged a racist for doing so.

The only thing that does is show the accuser to be the bigot, not the owner.

Under no circumstances should it be flown over any government building. But if someone wants to fly it over their home or business. That's their right.

Freedom of speech and expression clearly gives them the right to do that.

Not according to dabe. I'm branded a racist and a bigot when she doesn't know the first thing abou me. Uncle Sam spent a lot of money to make "sure" I was neither.

Remember the 3 fingers.  What she says reveals more about herself than any part of you.

When you point a finger at someone, three of them are pointing back at you.

It's interesting that Dabe would be the one to do an article about how the Confererate Battle Flag is a symbol of hate, when there are many at JU who seem to see the letters D-A-B and E as a symbol of hatred.
